The word “ñeta” in Taino, which is the Puerto Rican native Indian language, means “new birth”. Ñetas’ traditional enemies are the G-27 who came from the Manuel A. Perez Housing Projects in the city of San Juan. The G-27 were well known ruthless and random killers that preyed on the people from the Monacillo area in Rio Piedras, PR. The Ñeta were originally formed to combat the G-27 predators that came into their neighborhood. The G-27 inmates were then derogatorily called "Insectos" by the Ñeta. Allegedly, they would even hurt women, children and the elderly out on the streets. The Ñeta will now try to use this “Robin Hood” image to be freedom fighters, but they too are killers who control approximately 75% of the drugs that are found in the Puerto Rican system! They are the largest gang in Puerto Rico and are also active in many parts of the United States.

A feud during the late 1970’s Prisoner Riots caused a lot of tension inside Puerto Rican penal institutions and over fifty deaths occurred as a result. Per Ñeta prison gang expert, and Associate Warden Luis Rosa, the Puerto Rican Prisoner Riots first actually began in earnest at the Bayamon Regional Jail. It later spread to “La Princesa” and in one riot in 1976 resulted in 20 inmates being wounded while fighting. An inmate named Carlos Torres-Iriarte “La Sombra" had formed the “Pro-Inmate Rights Association” and became the recognized leader of the “Pro-Inmate Rights Association” also known as “La Associacion Ñetas” faction. Meanwhile, the G-27 formed a rival “Committee Pro-Quality of Life for Inmates”. Because of this conflict, the G-27 killed “La Sombra” on orders of their leader Mickey “Manota” Santito. On March 30, 1981, La Sombra was stabbed by G-27 member "Ito El Loco" three times and then shot with a 22. cal. weapon. The last words some reported he said were "Puñeta", or trying to say it, (ñeta, ñeta, ñeta) which is a derogatory word used frequently on the Island. He died as a result of his wounds. In retaliation, “La Manota” was killed and stabbed over 400 times by Ñetas. To this day Ñeta and G-27 have to be separated into different units. The Netas state they are a prisoners “group”, not a Security Threat Group, but just like any prison gang they have amassed as much power as possible over other inmates. In the U.S., they usually get along with Latin Kings who they refer to as “Primos” or cousins. There has been occasions where Ñetas and Kings have gone to war, but most have more in common than not.

GPS also teaches about Black gangs, Asian gangs, White Supremacists, and other Security Threat Groups. We have taught gang classes to many groups, including police, corrections, probation and parole officers, juvenile workers, schools, Job Corps, church groups, etc. if you are interested in our services. We look forward to hearing from you! Take care out there!
